Brie Larson seems to have become an oddly controversial figure in 2019. Off the back of an academy award, it was announced she would play Captain Marvel back in 2016. This year Captain Marvel came out, and the world was interested. Ranking #5 for the highest worldwide box office gross this year, Captain Marvel was the center of attention for some time in 2019. Brie Larson wasn't getting a lot of attention for her directorial debut coming to Netflix. The title of the film and the cover art they used paints a pretty good picture of what you can expect out of this movie. The whole objective message of the film is self-expression and confidence in that expression is good, which I think is a valuable message. Where the movie fails is how abstract the plot gets and how odd Larson acts out this role seemingly made for herself. It seems like the message is supposed to be very relatable, but it comes off a little too artificial, sort of like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I think Larson could have more success in the future, but she should maybe try to stay on one side of the camera for her next picture. I would recommend to any huge Brie Larson fans. Oh, and I forgot to mention Samuel L. Jackson has a pretty entertaining role in this, so there's that too.
