Us is one of my favourites of the year. It plays like a delightful and suspenseful horror movie on the surface while having lots of details to interpret. The ideas that Us left me with were solidified gum on the sidewalks and streets of my mind. For weeks I couldn’t stop thinking and talking about this film. To me, Us and Pulp Fiction are similar works. They’re both incredibly enjoyable and digestible on the surface level, with lots of smaller elements to pick apart underneath. Both directors are influenced heavily by other films. I do, however, accept the fact that Us is not a “masterpiece.” Peele tends to be a little ham-fisted with the messages in his films, often detracting from the impact of the film. Us, however, has me hopeful. I believe Peele has the talent to create something masterful; he may need time to work out some of his kinks. I would recommend us to any fans of the horror/thriller genre, or anyone trying to play catchup for the year.
